What should I expect from an interview? • 02.20.12
If you are unemployed and looking for a job then you know how frustrating it can be. You can apply at twenty different places and not have one of those places call you back for an interview. You may have had your last interview years ago and may not even remember how to interview anymore. Getting that interview once in a blue moon means that you must put your best foot forward to get that job because that opportunity might not come again.
First you should get your clothing for the interview in order. Depending on whether you are a male or a woman will depend on what you wear specifically. However, the standard is that you should be dressed in at least business casual attire. If you have any doubts about the dress code for the interview, you can always research on what people wear to an average day at work and wear something similar to the interview.
When you arrive for the interview you should arrive at least fifteen minutes early. Obviously you should not arrive too early because there might be someone interviewing right before you. However, if you arrive late or right on time this may cause the interviewer to get a bad first impression about you. When the interviewer comes up to you, you should introduce yourself and give firm handshake. The firm handshake is key, because it shows that you are confident. Your body language says a lot more about you then your words often say.
During the actual interview you should appear relaxed and at ease. Do not studder or use words such as “umm” during the interview. If you must, take a pause and avoid saying the word “umm”. You should also have practiced your interviewing questions before you arrived for the interview so that you appear well versed for what they are asking you. You can look up the typical questions before the interview and practice in front of a mirror or in front of somebody you know until you get the questions right. You should also look the interviewer in the eyes and not look away or fiddle with your clothing.
After the interview is done, you must go back home and await the results of the interview. This can be a stressful time, but do not worry because you gave it your best! You will get that job before you know it.
