What should I wear to an interview? • 02.19.12
There is no doubt that an interview can be one of the most stressful times of your life. No matter if you are a natural at interviewing, you will most likely feel some nervousness or anxiety before your interview. One thing you should not be worrying about, however, is what you should be wearing to an interview.
What you wear says a lot about you. An interviewer can tell a lot about you from the way you dress, and they use these first impressions a lot more then you think. No matter if you are the best interviewee on the planet, if you make a bad first impression then it is highly unlikely that you will receive the job. First impressions make up of eighty percent of our thoughts toward a person. You can change these impressions of a person over time, but in a fifteen minutes interview you will not be able to accomplish this. This is why you should make the best first impression you can upon the interviewer.
Males should stick to dress pants and a dress shirt at the very minimum while interviewing. The rules of thumb for knowing how to dress for an interview is business casual. You should always be dressed one step higher then the person who is interviewing you. There is no such thing as coming overly dressed for an interview. You will simply show that you are passionate about being professional.
Males should also stick with neutral colors. Wear either black dress pants or khakis and a nice polo shit to match the khakis. There should not be too many flashy colors on you. Males should also shave their faces to appear professional and style their hair in order to keep it out of their face. If possible, get a haircut before your interview. The more clean your appearance looks, the better it will go for you.
Woman have a choice when it comes to what to wear to an interview. Woman can wear a skirt with a business top, or dress pants. If a woman decides to go with a skirt then the skirt should not be higher up then the knees. This way when you sit down, you do not have to worry about showing off your underwear. You want to receive the interview based on your intelligence and your qualifications and not what you look like. You should also keep your hair back and in a ponytail or a bun.
How should I respond to the questions they ask during interviews? • 02.18.12
Interviewing is a fine art that takes a lot of practice. Many people think that interviewing is a skill that you are either born with or something that comes naturally to a person. However, interviewing is as much learned as walking or riding a bike. In order to be a good interviewee, you will need to put in a fair amount of practice. The better you get at interviewing, then the better chance you have of getting that job.
During an interview, you will be asked a series of questions that you have to respond to. After the usual introductions you will be asked about your previous place of employment and what your pay expectations are. You should answer the questions about your previous place of employment as truthfully as you can. They will usually call this place to follow up on your answers so it is wise not to lie. You should also not bad mouth your previous employer, because this can make you look bad in the eyes of the interviewer. You should come off as kind and focused on your work as possible. You should know approximately what they expect to pay for this job, and you should not ask for too much. The more you ask, the more the interviewer will hesitate about hiring you.
After these questions they will ask you the standard interviewing questions. These questions you should practice before you arrive at the interview so that you have an answer ready on the spot. You should be able to provide answers almost immediately and an answer of “I do not know” does not reflect well upon you.
Some of these questions are the ones such as “What is your biggest weakness” or “What is your biggest strength”. For questions such as these, you should avoid making yourself look bad. You have to find a way to turn the weakness into a strength for the company. For example you could say something as “My biggest weakness is that I work too hard, and I accomplish too much in a short amount of time. However, I feel that my productiveness could be beneficial to the company”. This way you are naming something that makes you different from other people, and something that the company could also deem useful in terms of a weakness. You want to avoid weaknesses such as being anti-social or not productive and lazy. These make you sound unappealing and that is the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish in the interview.
