* Do a reference check on yourself. Regardless of what your previous boss said when you separated from your last position – have a person that you know call and ask for a reference on you. It is important to know exactly what your ex-employer is going to say about you. This will be one way to protect yourself from negative references.

* Do not borrow against the money in your 401(k) even if your company’s plan allows it. If you become unemployed, 401(k) loans have to be repaid, usually within 60 days, or it will count as an early withdrawal and you will get hit with a tax penalty. (more…)
